Geaux swamp tour , part deaux

Ready for more? After the tour and garden it was getting late. All of us are famous for getting hangry, which means hungry and grumpy. We discovered that a lot of small town restaurants are closed early or all day Saturday. Things were a bit tense in the car as place after place did not work out. We gratefully whipped into this cute diner that was jumping.

Oyster poboy

and gumbo. (not great).

After a walk through town, we headed to the Konriko rice factory.

It is the oldest working rice mill in America. It was very cool. The tour guide explained the relationship between the rice fields and crawfish.

You have to love a factory that has a cat working there.

Back to our place for happy hour on the bayou.

Our view was so pretty.

We were on a curve so we had panoramic views. We were all a little tired and Sophie a lot sick, so we decided to eat in. Jan and Cary bravely drove to a little dump of a place and brought back the BEST food so far! They said it was a little tiny kitchen just cranking out great local fare. We got boiled shrimp, potatoes and corn.

We just sat in our apartment and peeled away. The shrimp was perfect. It must have been swimming in the bayou that morning.

The next morning we ate at Victor's. If you have read James Lee Burke's novels, you will recognize this cafeteria. His detective Dave Robicheaux eats here.

We were a little confused but the great waitstaff gladly helped us and made us feel welcome.

What more can I say? Perfect.

Headed home, but we stopped by crawfish fields.

Those little pink cups are the top of crawfish traps.

They put bait in the cup and the crawfish crawl up the sides and fall into the basket.

This picture does not do justice to how beautiful these ditch flowers were.

Final fun was Tony the Tiger at a truck stop. They were really serious about keeping him against animal rights groups pressure. Animals raised in captivity must stay in captivity. It is the only life  they know. When these type animals are "freed" by animal rights groups they usually die of homesickness. He looked very happy.

Back home.

  1. Great trip. Would not be complete without a cat picture. I used to photo them everywhere we went. They are the same all over the world. Even Russia, And you ended it with a beautiful tiger cat. Loved it all,,,,,,MOM
