42nd 3

First stop in Laurel was Ed’s choice. Ben’s shop and store.

You can see through a window where they are filming the show. They weren’t today.

It was very cold and windy outside but this still made me want a cold drink.

Next we went to the main store.

Mary Grace asked for a headband. Guess which one she picked. Yellow of course. We got an Adam Trest print to put with our Walter Anderson one from Ocean Springs.

Then we went to the beautiful Scent Libray. It was so hard to choose. You could clear your palate by smelling coffee beans ( also sold here of course ).

The Lauren Rogers museum gave us a chance to get out of the cold.

I love this place. It is so calm and lovely.

Their Chulily is so amazing hanging over the stairs.

And I always love the Japanese prints. This display showed the actual wooden block prints and how they built up the layers to complete the print.

More food. Wilson Commissary. Seriously good chicken and dumplings.

Went to the restroom there and John Travolta was sharing the room with me.

A blonde latte to warm up.

42nd 2

Weather cleared and we ventured out. Let Ed check out the pocket museum.

I just love it. People leave painted rocks. Should have painted one with our anniversary on it.

Valentine sculpture.

So tiny.

A Frida Kahlo display.

Next we went to the library. Wanted Ed to see the beautiful mural.

A kind lady saw us looking and guided us to The Mississippi Room. Floors, trim and columns are made from donated pine. They were cut in the 1830’s and sank to the bottom. They were brought up and used here.

Being underwater makes them gorgeous and hard for pine.

So pretty. Picked up Triangle poboys and headed back before next big storm comes through. More tomorrow.

42nd anniversary

Sandy is glad cold weather is back.

Connie set a lovely table for us at JFF book club.

Fun crowd.

Serious discussion about The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

Headed out for our anniversary trip to Hattiesburg / Laurel area. First stop Shady Acres.

Any questions?

After a few scary driving miles with a tornado warning, we gratefully sought safety in our hotel.

Pretty cute room. Will let the weather calm down and decide what to do next.

Nostalgia part 2

We are into boxes of baby clothes. These are some of Sophie’s tiny premie clothes. She was only 4 pounds 11 ounces. It’s hard to get rid of things but if the girls had babies I’m sure they would want new things.

And all the toys they loved so much look so sad and dirty.

And then the handmade things! Mom made the little sleeveless ones on the right. We called them diaper shirts. They looked so cute on babies.

Loved making rompers and dresses out of chintz.

My Uncle Cecil made each girl a doll bed. I put decals on them. This one suffered a rough fate. The kids all persisted in getting IN the beds.

Found my favorite jeans ever. You can’t tell in the picture how tiny and LOW cut they were. All the girls wanted 2 button jeans. The brand to have was BB. Got them at Jack’s Jeans. Coolest place in town. My own little touch at the bottom.

I was happy to find this though. My Mamaw Brown made these for all her granddaughters one Christmas.

She did a pig for me.

Must have been 1974 or so.

Cleaning out

Since Ed doesn’t have yard work to do he has decided to clean out our attic. This is the side with toys and really old stuff are stored (flung?)

Easter baskets. Only Ivy Rose wanted hers.

Bucky horse. They rode this thing down our driveway and hill when they were way to old for it. Not sure how it survived.

This is a sewing box my sister Linda made back in the day. They were all the rage then. It is made from a wheel of cheese box.

Still looks brand new inside.

It held my unfinished needlepoint projects.

They really were cute.  I even drew the pattern

2 old, old embroidery hoops. I meant to put something in them and frame them.

Boy Priscilla, Beth Zachry and I were ambitious (and broke).
I can only do this a little at a time. It’s emotionally draining.

98

We gathered in the Garden Room at St. C’s to celebrate.

She wanted hot dogs. Her favorite. We obliged.

The locals.

Boston Cream Pie. She said her wish was to make it to 100! Hope so.

Love how the dogs use this stump to look out over the gully into the neighborhood beyond.

The mahonia a bursting this year.

I wish y’all could smell them with me. They are buzzing with honeybees. I bet that honey would taste very sweet.
